Story John Mellencamp

Songwriter, originaire de l’Indiana, son producteur insiste pour que le 1er album Chestnut Street Incident en 1976 sorte sous le nom de Johnny Cougar, arguant que le nom Mellencamp est trop difficile à commercialiser. C'est cependant un échec commercial. En 1977, John Mellencamp enregistre The Kid Inside mais son label décide de ne pas le sortir. Il est renvoyé de MCA Records (L’opus sortira finalement en 1983, après qu’il soit célèbre).  Il signe avec le label Riva, et le titre  I Need a Lover en 1979, repris par Pat Benatar, lui donne un début de notoriété. En 1982, il sort son album révélation, American Fool qui figure encore sous pseudo John Cougar. Il enregistre Uh-Huh en 1983 en ajoutant son véritable nom.  En 1985, il signe le formidable opus, Scarecrow, et fonde Farm Aid avec Willie Nelson et Neil Young,  festival caritatif en faveur des fermiers américains en difficulté. The Lonesome Jubilee en 1987, nommé Mellencamp, est une véritable pépite.
